Sannes is located on the southern foothills of the Luberon mountains, at an average altitude of 310 meters. The town has 162 inhabitants. It is part of the Luberon Regional Park.
Between the Ist and the IInd century near the farm of Clots, Ascius founded a Vicius (small town) on the site. Associated with this Surname suffix ana (Villa) is at the origin of the name of the village. The vicus was Christianized from the fourth or fifth century. In 1155 the village name was then Sannia, Assana in 1274. From 1793 till 1801 the official name was Saunes to become Sannes.
