At 376 meters, overlooking the valley of the Durance, Cadenet has 3950
inhabitants. It is necessary to rise up to the feudal castle where a magnificent view of the Durance,the Luberon,Sainte-Victoire and the Alpilles waits for you.
Here until 1978 through the cultivation of wicker, the weave baskets was very present. You will find a few craftsmen in the village who will show you their work and you can visit the museum of the basketwork of art.
During the Protohistory the site was occupied by people celto-ligure; the tribe of
Caudellenses ( Cavares) of the name of which arises the place-name of Cadenet. An important oppidum is present on the hill of Castellar.
Cadenet in pre-Roman was the first capital city of "Pays d'Aigues".
The city was completely destroyed in the VIIIth century by Saracen invasions.
From the Xth century, the names of "Cadanetum" and "Cadenetum" is attested.

The canton of Cadenet was offered by Louis XIV to the brother of the duke of Luynes, Honoré d' Albert who became the Lord of Cadenet.This last one was the creator of the famous hairstyle which we wore in the court: cadenettes.
Beautiful facades of the seventeenth and eighteenth

The Tambour d'Arcole, statue of André Estienne
bronze by Jean Barnabé Amy. André Estienne (1777-1838) was the hero of a Napoleonic battle.
He enlisted at 14 years in the Regiment of the Luberon and followed Napoleon in his Italian campaign. At Arcola, Napoleon's troops blocked the river by the Alpone; the small drum swam across with his instrument on the head accompanied by some soldiers. On the other side, he starts beating the charge. Believing themselves surrounded, the enemy retreated, leaving the victory to the Napoleonic armies.
He received Napoleon's own hand the sticks of Honour in Silver.

It was rebuilt several times over the centuries, leaving only ruins from different periods. Today is a cultural and an exhibition. It has an outdoor theater where data are very pleasant musical evenings.
